SQE: the story so far

Since its launch in September 2021, the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) route has reshaped solicitor training, removed unnecessary barriers and provided more flexibility.

SQE Quality Assurance Report 2023-24

Here we explain what we have done to quality assure the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (the SQE) between October 2023 and July 2024. This is the third report since the introduction of the SQE in autumn 2021.

SQE Independent Reviewer Annual Report 2024

This report comments on the progress of recommendations made by the previous post holder in their report published in April 2024. Further recommendations for improvements or enhancements are made, as well as encouragement to continue good practice when it has been observed and identified.

Education and training authorisation and monitoring activity - September 2022 – August 2023

This report summarises our quality assurance activity in relation to the Legal Practice Course (LPC) route to qualification. This route usually involves obtaining a qualifying law degree or Common Practice Examination, an LPC and a period of recognised training. Unless otherwise stated, the report relates to the period 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023.

Potential causes of differential outcomes by ethnicity in legal professional assessments

There is a widely acknowledged and long-standing difference in legal qualification outcomes by ethnicity. Our annual education and training monitoring reports show this difference and it is also evident in other sectors, countries and stages of education.

SQE Independent Reviewer Annual Report 2022/23

In January 2019, the SRA created a role of Independent Reviewer of the SQE. The purpose is to provide external assurance to the SRA and its exam services provider Kaplan, that the SQE is fair, defensible and can command public confidence.

Experiences of qualifying work experience: survey findings

We have conducted a baseline survey in November 2022 to gather information about initial perceptions and experiences of the SQE and QWE.
