Warning: Email claiming to be from 'John Nuer' of 'RT Legal Solicitors'

An email has been sent from 'John Nuer', claiming to be an attorney at 'RT Legal Solicitors' offering assistance in recovering an alleged inheritance.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen emails claiming to be from an individual called 'John Nuer' purporting to be 'Attorney John Nuer, a solicitor at law' at 'RT Legal Solicitors'.

The email refers to an alleged inheritance of £10.6 million and offers to help the member of the public access the inheritance in return for a percentage of the inheritance.

The email includes the telephone numbers '+1 319 254 9162 (US)', '‪+44 7440 748265 (UK)' and the email attorney.john@realtimelawyers.org' in the signature.

Any business or transaction through the telephone numbers '+1 319 254 9162 (US)', '‪+44 7440 748265 (UK)' and the email attorney.john@realtimelawyers.org' are not undertaken by any individual or firm authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a solicitor called 'John Nuer' neither a firm called 'RT Legal Solicitors'.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
