Warning: Email misusing the name and details of Tina Pettinger and RWK Goodman LLP

An email has been sent which misuses the name and details of Tina Pettinger and RWK Goodman LLP asking the recipient to deposit monies into a trust account.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen an email sent to the client of a genuine firm in relation to transferring funds into a trust account. The email misuses the name and details of the genuine firm (see genuine details below) and the name of a genuine solicitor (see below).

The email was sent from tina.pettinger@rkwgoodman.com, switching the k and w of the genuine email domain @rwkgoodman.com. The footer for this email misuses the genuine firm SRA ID 557896 and registered address Midland Bridge House, Midland Bridge Rd, Bath BA2 3FP.

Any business or transaction through the above email address is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor Christina Pettinger (SRA ID 506494) and her employer, a genuine firm of solicitors RWK Goodman LLP (SRA ID 557896). The genuine firm uses the email domain @rwkgoodman.com, website www.rwkgoodman.com and contact number 08009232073.

The genuine firm has confirmed that neither they nor Tina Pettinger have any connection to the emails referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
